The DLS 4200 for National Petroleum Construction Company Ltd. (NPCC) of Abu Dhabi is a self-propelled derrick lay vessel with a 10-point mooring system for operations in water depths up to 150 m. For deep water operations the vessel utilises its DP II system. It is equipped with a 4,200 sT NOV AmClyde Model 80 fully revolving derrick crane. Developed by Ulstein Sea of Solutions, now Ulstein Design & Solutions B.V., the vessel was delivered from Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC), China, on the 28 July 2013, becoming the largest vessel of NPCC in terms of lifting capacity. Since its delivery the vessel has been involved in multiple pipe laying and installation operations in the Middle East and Indian Ocean regions.
The vessel is based on the SOC 3000 design from Ulstein, and has a length of 196.9 metres and breadth of 43.4 metres, and a lifting capacity of 4,200 short tons. The DLS 4200 can carry out S-Lay & Steep S-Lay pipe laying operations of up to 66 inches diameter in water depths from 10 to 2000 meters.
The DLS 4200 is designed aiming for maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness and features a centre double joint firing line to optimize pipelaying operations that are not hampered by vertical motions due to roll. Double joint fabrication areas are located on each side of the firing line. The firing line and the double joint fabrication areas are on a tween deck completely covered by the main deck. This provides a clean and dry environment for the pipelay equipment and an unobstructed main deck.
The S-lay pipelay system is based on a total of 4 welding stations and 4 dope and 1 NDT-repair stations in the firing line and includes three pipe tensioners of 125 tons each. Pipelay equipment lay-out is set-up such that full redundancy is provided, meaning that pipelay can always continue when any single component fails. On site pipe handling from supply barges is done by two dedicated pipe handling cranes.
