UN Global Compact
UN Global Compact is the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative. It is a call to companies to align strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption and take actions that advance societal goals.
We report annually our activities in the ten principles of the UN Global Compact.
UN’s sustainable development goals
In September 2015, all 193 Member States of the United Nations adopted a plan for achieving a better future for all — laying out a path over the next 15 years to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and protect our planet. At the heart of “Agenda 2030” are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which clearly define the world we want — applying to all nations and leaving no one behind.
This is how we support the UN’s sustainable development goals. We allocate resources to innovation and new solutions for environmentally sound marine and maritime activities. We take on the responsibility to deliver long-lasting ships that are more energy efficient, and that can be powered by renewable energy sources or by low-carbon solutions. This includes new types of vessels or solutions that help the customers increase their value while improving fuel efficiency, reducing emissions and doing less harm to the environment.
Product development
When designing a ship or developing a product, we keep in mind their life cycle environmental impact. Any product will have an impact when being produced, when being in use, and when taken out of use. We keep updated on all new environmental standards and safety regulations and constantly work to implement these in new developments to reduce the overall impact.
Sensible use of resources
Some of our activities are regulated by laws and regulations which have been drawn up for the protection of the natural environment, and need extra attention.
Our shipyard is our single largest company, which in turn leads to a great demand for resources. Keeping the use of resources at a sensible level and reducing the environmental risks in waste handling are target areas. Vessel construction leads, inevitably, to the production of waste. Our shipyard has procedures for a responsible handling of waste, including hazardous waste, various metals, oil, residues from sandblasting and painting. Also, the yard has put much efforts and investments in energy efficiency and energy conservation.
Conscious carbon steps
The shipping industry is transitioning towards reduced emissions and improved energy efficiency. Whether integrated into a novel design, or retrofitted, a solution supporting the transition should be the best compromise between operational needs, the most environmentally friendly solution, cost, and benefit.
