RoPax developments - with the heart and mind of shipbuilders

Published

The heart of Ulstein Verft lies in our dock hall, the pulsating centre for our ship constructions. Our mind is on securing the best possible experience for the ship owner and those travelling on their vessels. 'Color Hybrid', the world’s largest plug-in hybrid vessel, was recently delivered from our yard.

Quality is key to long-term competitiveness. Reliability and thoroughness in every step of the process from idea to delivery ensure lasting returns for our customer.

Quality, expertise and delivery precision are three essential factors when considering whom to partner up with in a ship newbuild project, and Ulstein’s dedication is to all three.

Quality design and finish

The passengers’ interests lie in the total experience onboard, related to interior standards with shopping and dining facilities, well planned logistics with little queuing and equally well-planned logistics in the parking areas, as well as a comfortable journey.

Engineering capacity

As an expert in the offshore segment, Ulstein Verft is dedicated to hull optimisation for year-round operations, propulsion set-up in redundant systems, bridge solutions and comfortable accommodation.

Ulstein has a skilled and competitive work force with a solution-oriented approach, and professional project teams. Due to our engineering capacity, we have the flexibility and ability to handle changes throughout the project. We also have a close cooperation with interior architects on several projects, to heighten accommodation standards.

Compact yard premises with dock hall in centre

The dock hall at Ulstein Verft was taken into use in 2002. The total dock length is 225 metres, with the roofed dock area measuring 110 metres in length, and 32 metres in width. Vessels built can have a length up to approx. 180 metres, which is considered medium sized as far as RoPax is concerned. Ship construction is performed in a controlled environment to secure the best finish, with warehouse and outfitting shops in the vicinity for efficient and short communication lines. The yard and design offices and the headquarter are all just a couple of minutes’ walk away.

Long-term partner

With more than 100 years of history, Ulstein is still a family-owned company. The yard has delivered more than 310 vessels, most of which are newbuilds, in addition to numerous conversions, repairs and upgrades.

Delivery at agreed price

When shipowners are considering a newbuild project they often have several yards to choose from, and the price offers vary. However, the price offered is not necessarily the final price on the day of delivery.

Firstly, calculate the importance of having the vessel delivered on-time. Is there a schedule for which the vessel needs to be set in service? Secondly, consider also the importance of keeping the vessel in operation, without the need to take it off duty for service and repairs. Thirdly, our price calculations are reasonable, and based on our long experience. Any add-ons in price during a shipbuilding project are agreed on in regular project meetings with the ship owner and based on ship owner’s change orders.
