In accordance with the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, shipowners must undertake actions to avoid the threat of invasive aquatic species into the marine ecosystems.
Ulstein Group collaborates with several renowned suppliers of equipment in order to secure that your ship will meet the standards set in the convention. We have dock capacity and can take on such assignments separately or as part of a classification. Ulstein also offers integration to the Integrated Automation System ‘ULSTEIN IAS’.
Level 1 – basics

Level 4 – Engineering, purchase, installation and testing
This level includes basic and detail engineering, purchase of delivery and installation and testing of the equipment.
What is the Ballast Water Management Convention?
IMO – the International Maritime Organization – is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships.
Invasive aquatic species present a major threat to the marine ecosystems, and shipping has been identified as a major pathway for introducing species to new environments. Ships will be required to manage their ballast water to remove, render harmless, or avoid the uptake or discharge of aquatic organisms and pathogens within ballast water and sediments. Several type-approved systems are already available.
The IMO ‘Ballast Water Management Convention’ (BWMC) requires all ships in international trade to manage their ballast water and sediments to certain standards, according to a ship-specific ballast water management plan. All ships will also have to carry a ballast water record book and an International Ballast Water Management Certificate.
