In the dry dock at Ulstein Verft, a construction is being set up. Not in steel or aluminium, but concrete. It is Ulstein Betong Marine constructing a pontoon for vessels in the Oslo fjord area.

Inside the dock hall at Ulstein Verft, the expedition cruise vessel National Geographic Resolution is currently getting her coating on. Even though the expedition cruise newbuild, yard number 316, needs all the space inside the dock hall and also some of the space in the dry dock outside, there is still room for more activity. The total dock length, covered and outdoors, is 225 metres while the newbuild has an overall length of 124.4m. The company Ulstein Betong Marine, a producer of floating concrete objects, now exploits the vacant area to construct a mooring / service quay for small work boats.

“We produce floating concrete constructions and have our own dry docks suitable for this purpose. When we received the order to construct a pontoon of 20x30m and 1,165t, our own facilities fell short due to a full order book” says Asbjørn Tronstad at Ulstein Betong Marine.

A phone call to Ulstein Verft solved the situation.

Must be ready within launch of Yno 316

Ulstein Betong Marine is working on limited time at the Ulstein Verft dock, they need to complete the pontoon within the float-out of the National Geographic Resolution which is due shortly after her coating has been completed.

“We are on schedule and will be ready to see our pontoon being launched in connection with the expedition cruise ship launch. That will be spectacular,” comments Tronstad.

“We had capacity in our dock. The pontoon will be launched at the same time as Yno 316, so it does not influence our project progress. This is a great example of how two companies in different industries can have a fruitful cooperation, a win-win situation for both parties”, comments Jan Peder Hoggen, service manager at Ulstein Verft.
